Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 24 – Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen recalled the bitter past, recalling the five times he was wounded and the loss of his eye during 105 battlefield engagements.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen spoke on Sunday (Nov. 24) during the opening of the 11th Plenary Session of the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (IPTP) at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel.
"I was wounded five times during my 105 trips to the battlefield, losing one eye. I risked my life as capital to liberate the country and finally traded my head for peace for the country through win-win policy,” the Senate president underscored.
He elaborated on two key reforms that were pivotal to Cambodia’s progress. The first reform was political, shifting from prolonged conflict to negotiations to end the war. The second was economic reform, which he likened to "three arrows piercing his chest," reflecting the immense challenges involved.
On the occasion, Samdech Techo continued that his life was fragile in the war, but it was more fragile to political life in that all these reforms had three problems.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen indicated that Samdech's good fortune has been achieved successfully, despite many obstacles, in the end, Samdech was still able to lead Cambodia to prosper. He concluded by highlighting the historic significance of Cambodia’s current era of peace, which has lasted nearly 27 years – the longest period of stability in the country’s history over the past 500 years.
