Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 26 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the governor of Kampong Thom Province proposed the establishment of a cashew industrial zone, and he has agreed to this initiative to create a new source of income for the people living in Zone 3.
The premier spoke on Tuesday (Nov. 26) during the closing session of the 2024 annual meeting of the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, "The governor of Kampong Thom Province requested the establishment of a cashew industrial zone. I agree that this will utilise state land, not private land, and it will remain state land. The goal is to create a cashew agro-industrial zone in Kampong Thom, providing employment for people in Zone 3 and surrounding zones, allowing them to work, farm, and sustain their livelihoods for up to 12 months."
The premier continued that he would encourage all provincial governors to adopt similar initiatives so that industrial zones and agro-industrial zones can be developed across the country, benefiting various regions and transforming the economy. He added that reliance on the livelihoods of people in Zone 3 must be reduced, and new sources of income must be created for them.
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei urged those working in Zone 2 to adhere to the Code of Conduct. He noted that once the land boundaries are defined, the principles and conditions for land use must be respected. He added that farming should be conducted responsibly, with clear boundaries, and without the use of harmful fertilisers that could damage biodiversity or degrade the land. Participation in these efforts is crucial.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, "We will issue and strictly enforce these principles. We are not afraid to enforce the law on this matter. In the past, we have implemented this law, and several individuals have been convicted for violations."
