Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 27 – Phnom Penh has been declared the first capital to achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus status.
The announcement was made under the chairmanship of the Minister of Rural Development Chhay Rithi Sen on Wednesday morning (Nov. 27) at Sokha Residence Hotel, Phnom Penh.
Minister Chhay Rithi Sen commended the significant progress and achievements of the capital across various sectors, including security, order, economy, society, and culture. He emphasised that this milestone reflects improved living conditions, particularly through enhanced water and sanitation services, contributing to public health, hygiene, and increased life expectancy.
The minister attributed this achievement to the country’s lasting peace under the leadership of former Prime Minister Hun Sen and current Prime Minister Hun Manet.
He further stated that the Ministry of Rural Development is actively implementing the National Action Plan on Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene. Currently, nationwide water and sanitation coverage stands at 88.80%, with 86.09% access to clean water and 91.47% sanitation coverage. The Ministry aims to achieve 100% coverage by 2030.
As of today, 12 capitals and provinces have reached ODF and ODF Plus status. In 2024, ceremonies are planned to announce two additional provinces, Takeo and Stung Treng, as achieving ODF status, bringing the total number of compliant provinces to 14 out of 25.
It is noteworthy that the ODF Plus status awarded to Phnom Penh reflects its exceptional sanitation standards. All households in the capital are equipped with toilets, with many having more than one. Public toilet availability has also contributed to creating a cleaner and healthier environment, solidifying Phnom Penh’s position as a leader in sanitation and hygiene.
