Beijing (FN), Dec. 4 – Chinese President Xi Jinping announced his support for Cambodia’s Funan Techo Canal project, a significant waterway initiative aimed at enhancing the kingdom's infrastructure and economic development.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate and the Cambodian People's Party, held a bilateral meeting on 3 December 2024 with Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and President of the People’s Republic of China, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing, China.
Samdech Techo thanked the Chinese government for its continued support for development progress in the kingdom, as well as infrastructure projects. Samdech Techo Hun Sen noted that China's support for development in Cambodia not only helped Cambodia's development, but also strengthened Cambodia's independence.
Talking about building infrastructure in Cambodia, the Chinese president also expressed support for the Funan Techo canal project.
Samdech Techo thanked President Xi Jinping for supporting the Funan Techo Canal Project, which dates back to the era of King Ang Duong. This project, Samdech Techo noted, will help Cambodia achieve independence in waterway transport and generate significant economic benefits.
The Funan Techo Canal project is a historic endeavour by the Cambodian people for future generations, with its groundbreaking ceremony held on 5 August 2024.
The Funan Techo Canal project aims to connect waterways between rivers and the sea of Cambodia, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces. It spans approximately 180 kilometres. The project is expected to cost about USD 1.7 billion and has been studied in detail.
