Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 4 – The Cambodian scarf, known as krama, has been inscribed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Asunción, Paraguay.
In a congratulatory message, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed pride in this historic achievement, stating, “This is a great accomplishment for the nation and its people, demonstrating our commitment to preserving the krama as a heritage for future generations.”
Samdech Thipadei also expressed his gratitude to Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk and King Norodom Sihamoni for their ongoing support of national cultural heritage. He further commended the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the krama weaving community, and various national and international institutions in achieving this milestone.
In recognition of the krama’s inscription, the prime minister called for widespread media coverage of this national achievement, emphasizing the deep cultural significance of the krama in Cambodian society.
