Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 12 – Four giant catfish were released back into the natural lake on December 10, 2024, through a collaboration between the Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Institute of the Fisheries Administration and the Mekong River Wonders Project.
The first catfish weighed 120 kg and was 222 cm long. The second catfish weighed 95 kg and was 203 cm long. It was caught in Koh Toch village, Tonle Thit commune, Tbong Khmum district, Tbong Khmum province, and was released into the natural lake. The third catfish weighed 131 kg and was 222 cm long. It was caught in Roka Koy commune, Kang Meas district, Kampong Cham province. The fourth catfish weighed 27 kg and was 130 cm long. It was caught in Fish Pond No. 3A (Phnom Penh) and was also released into the natural lake.
A team from the Freshwater Fisheries Research and Development Institute of the Fisheries Administration and the Mekong River Wonders Project re-tagged and safely released the Mekong Giant Catfish back into the natural lake for the purpose of studying and monitoring its movement and habitat during the dry season.
