Kandal (FN), Dec. 17 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed the construction of a bridge connecting the Mekong Quay City in Akreiy Ksatr to Koh Norea and called for a feasibility study on both overwater and underwater bridges. Currently, Cambodia has many large bridges spanning rivers and waterways that facilitate travel and the transportation of goods.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Dec. 17) at the groundbreaking ceremony for the “Mekong Quay City” development project in Akreiy Ksatr City, Kandal Province.

Following the achievement of complete peace, the Royal Government of Cambodia has focused on the development of various infrastructure systems, including roads, railways, airports, bridges, overpasses, and ports, to improve transportation and ease travel for the people.

Samdech Thipadei underlined that the development of a modern city requires expanding its infrastructure, including roads and bridges, both over water and underwater, to support traffic and boost the economy. He noted that after the completion of the Cambodia-South Korea Friendship Bridge, economic activity on the eastern side of the Mekong River will increase. In particular, this bridge will reduce travel time and connect infrastructures from Akreiy Ksatr to National Road No. 8, bypassing the need to travel through Prek Ta Mak Bridge on National Road No. 6.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, “I saw yesterday that there was a study on the connection from Koh Norea to Phnom Penh. I have asked the private sector to study the connection between the new satellite city in Akreiy Ksatr and Koh Norea, exploring both overwater and underwater bridge options.”

Samdech Thipadei added that the study to connect the Mekong River Satellite City in Akreiy Ksatr with National Road No. 1 will help open up direct access, saving time for residents, and providing a more efficient route to Koh Pich City. This infrastructure will greatly improve people’s travel.

Samdech Thipadei stated that if an underwater road is built, it would be highly beneficial, and he hopes such a project will be realised soon. Connecting regions in this way will boost economic activities and better serve the needs of the people.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet also highlighted that connecting infrastructure not only facilitates travel but also drives economic growth by linking different regions. He continued that the development of infrastructure should carefully consider traffic flow and the connectivity of roads and bridges to ease travel.
