Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 18 – Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), stated that the successful management of the situation created by the previous opposition group reflected the leadership capabilities of the CPP, which is guided by a long-term, clear vision, and the competence of the young successors, who are highly responsible, proactive, and thoughtful in all aspects.
Samdech Techo spoke on Wednesday (Dec. 18) during a closing conference on 2024 achievements and future directions for CPP Mass Movement Committee, held at the CPP’s headquarter.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen stated that in the past, extremist groups had used the Cambodia-Laos-Viet Nam Development Triangle Area (CLV-DTA) as a political tool to slander and attack the Royal Government. This led to confusion among some people, including accusations that the Royal Government was ceding the territory of the four northeastern provinces to foreign countries. Ultimately, these efforts were used to incite people to participate in the implementation of the 18 August Plan, an attempt to destabilise the country and overthrow the legitimate government, inspired by the successful execution of similar plans in Bangladesh. However, Samdech Techo underlined that Cambodia was already aware of the tactics of color revolutions and successfully prevented such an outcome.
Samdech Techo added that had the situation been mishandled, it could have resulted in bloodshed. However, the 18 August Plan ultimately failed, and peace and stability in society were firmly maintained.
Samdech Techo stated, “The victory in managing this situation reflects the CPP’s long-term, clear-sighted leadership, as well as the ability of the next generation of young leaders who take ownership of solving problems, addressing the concerns of the people in a timely manner, and displaying a proactive, thorough, and comprehensive approach.”
Samdech Techo Hun Sen added that these tactics—political tools and psychological warfare—are commonly used by opposition parties and foreign actors who seek to interfere in Cambodia’s internal affairs, create chaos, or push for regime change that deviates from a democratic path. He condemned populist, extremist, and absolutist politics, which are often disguised under the false banners of nationalism and democracy, and should not be used in political competition.
On the occasion, Samdech Techo asserted that every politician should prioritise peace, and peace should never be a secondary concern to electoral victory or the pursuit of specific ideological goals. He also stated that smear campaigns, disinformation, and unilateral sanctions against countries that refuse to conform to certain geopolitical agendas should not become the norm in international relations.
