Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 23 – Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia host the largest Chinese populations, due to historical and cultural ties with China.

Many are descendants of immigrants who settled generations ago, unlike Western countries like Australia and Canada, where most Chinese arrivals are recent.

China, while not the top emigrant source globally (behind India and Mexico), leads in high net worth individuals (HNWIs) leaving.

In 2023, over 13,000 HNWIs emigrated to destinations like the US, Canada, and Singapore. This number is expected to rise to 15,200 in 2024, driven by China's slowing economy, real estate issues, and regulatory crackdowns.
