Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 26 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet strongly urged strict legal action against gangs involved in violent activities, speaking on Thursday (Dec. 26) during a graduation of the University of Human Resources students, held at the National Institute of Education.

Samdech Thipadei instructed the Ministry of Justice to study and implement stricter punishments for gang-related violence, highlighting the need for tougher measures after identifying that current penalties are too lenient.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, “In my view, failing to enforce the law effectively jeopardizes the future of young individuals. Simply summoning them for administrative education allows them to return and repeat their violent behaviour, instilling fear in no one. The continued enforcement against over 2,000 offenders sends a clear and powerful message to deter such actions.”

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also underlined the importance of addressing street gang activities, particularly those involving motorcycles. He highlighted past incidents of individuals carrying knives and samurai swords and boasting on social media. The premier affirmed that carrying such weapons is equivalent to illegal possession of arms, which must be dealt with accordingly.

The seventh-mandate Royal Government, under the leadership of Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, has prioritised security as the fourth key measure among its five core initiatives to ensure village and commune safety.
