Pursat (FN), Jan. 20 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet publicly reaffirmed that the agriculture sector remains a top priority for the Royal Government of Cambodia.

The premier spoke on Monday (Jan. 20) at the inauguration of the newly established village “Bun Rany Sen Chey Damnak Troyeung” in Pro’ngel commune, Phnom Kravanh district, Pursat province.

Samdech Thipadei underlined that the Royal Government has always been attentive to the challenges faced by farmers. He noted that while he may not have made public statements recently, he has been actively monitoring the situation and issuing instructions to ministries and relevant institutions to find solutions and provide assistance to farmers.

“I want to inform the public that even though I have not spoken publicly or responded to external comments daily, the Royal Government, along with ministries and specialised institutions, has not been silent or indifferent. Agriculture is a critical priority for our country and the world,” Samdech Thipadei underscored.

In the occasion, Samdech Thipadei added that the global significance of agriculture, highlighting that as long as people need food, agriculture and food security will remain at the forefront of the Royal Government’s agenda. He also noted that food security is not just a national concern but a pressing issue for many countries around the world.

Samdech Thipadei continued that food security is a key responsibility of the Royal Government on two fronts, 1) supporting producers or growers and 2) ensuring affordability for consumers. He highlighted that the government must work to stabilise markets and ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their products without causing excessive price hikes.

In this regard, the Royal Government of Cambodia acknowledges the concerns of farmers and is committed to addressing their challenges. The government will continues to support efforts to identify and resolve the issues faced by farmers.

To address recent concerns, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined that the Royal Government has allocated USD 150 million to purchase rice from farmers. Additionally, the government has urged financial institutions to offer low-interest loans to rice millers to help them buy rice from farmers, further stabilising the agricultural sector.
