Pursat (FN), Jan. 20 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that the Royal Government shall address two key aspects of food security: growers or producers and consumers. He emphasised that the Royal Government of Cambodia, through its ministries and institutions, has consistently prioritised this issue.
The premier spoke on Monday (Jan. 20) at the inauguration of the newly established village “Bun Rany Sen Chey Damnak Troyeung” in Pro’ngel commune, Phnom Kravanh district, Pursat province.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet explained that while people continue to consume rice and meat, agriculture remains a vital factor, making food security a top priority. He noted that many nations are deeply concerned about food security because it directly affects survival. He remarked, “Without a phone, people do not die, but without food, they do.” The Royal Government of Cambodia has thus given significant attention to food security and the agricultural sector.
“The issue of food security involves two responsibilities for the Royal Government: the growers or producers and the consumers. For farmers, growers, and livestock keepers, the government must ensure that markets function effectively, particularly in terms of prices and support,” the premier underscored.
At this point, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet further stressed the importance of maintaining a balance: ensuring favourable market prices for farmers and growers while preventing excessive increases in commodity prices, especially for food. He noted that the Minister of Commerce is required to report food market prices daily. Cambodia has successfully maintained low inflation rates over the past two years. Inflation rose by 2.1% in 2023 and fell below 1% in 2024, reflecting stable food prices in Cambodia, unlike in some countries where food price inflation exceeds 30%.
Regarding certain agricultural crops, Samdech Thipadei assured the public that although he has not responded to external criticisms, the Royal Government and relevant ministries have not been idle. Agriculture remains a priority sector for Cambodia and the global community.
