Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 2 – The Australia Awards Scholarships (AAS) will open applications tomorrow, running until April 30, 2025 for the 2026 intake. These prestigious scholarships provide Cambodian students the opportunity to pursue master’s or PhD degrees at top universities in Australia.
AAS is part of the Australian Government’s development aid programme, which seeks to build stronger people-to-people ties between Cambodia and Australia while supporting Cambodia’s growing economic growth. Since 1994, more than 1,000 Cambodians have received funding through AAS, enabling them to further their education and contribute to their nation’s development.
The scholarships cover full tuition fees, return air travel, an allowance for accommodation and living expenses, textbooks and study materials. Additionally, AAS offers an introductory academic programme, overseas student health cover for the duration of the award, pre-course English training fees (if necessary), supplementary academic support, and fieldwork costs for research students.
The scholarships are open to all Cambodian citizens, including individuals from the public sector, academia, think tanks, civil society organisations, media, and the private sector.
AAS particularly encourages applications from women, people with disabilities, those from indigenous and ethnic minority groups, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and others from marginalised communities.
Applicants must meet several eligibility criteria. They must have been residents of Cambodia for at least two years prior to the application deadline, and they must have at least two years of full-time work experience or its equivalent. For those applying for a master’s scholarship, a completed bachelor’s degree is required, while those seeking a doctoral scholarship must have already completed a relevant master’s degree. English proficiency is also a key requirement: applicants for master’s by coursework must have an IELTS score of at least 6.0, with no sub-band lower than 5.5, while applicants for master’s by research or PhD programmes must have a score of at least 6.5, with no sub-band lower than 6.0.
