Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 3 – Nine countries collectively hold over 12,000 nuclear warheads, with Russia and the US accounting for 90%. While Russia has a larger total inventory, the US deploys more on intercontinental missiles and bombers.

Of the 12,121 warheads, about 9,585 remain in active stockpiles. A single detonation over a major city could kill millions, while a US-Russia war could cause hundreds of millions of casualties.

Long-term effects include radiation exposure, environmental damage, and health issues like cancer. Experts estimate 2.4 million deaths from cancers linked to nuclear tests from 1945–1980.

Types of Warheads
- Deployed Warheads: Installed on intercontinental missiles, heavy bomber bases, or operational short-range delivery systems.
- Reserve Warheads: Stored and not mounted on launchers.
- Retired Warheads: Intact but awaiting dismantlement.
