Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 4 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet believed that researching and documenting the identity of ancient Khmer martial arts is crucial for their preservation and continuity.

Samdech Thipadei received a courtesy call by Thong Khon, Senior Minister in charge of Special Mission and also the Chairman of the Research Commission on the Secret Book of Khmer Ancestral Martial Arts, on Tuesday (Feb. 4) at the Peace Palace.

During the meeting, Thong Khon briefed Samdech Thipadei on the progress of research into the secret books of ancient Khmer martial arts, highlighting the commission’s key achievements.

He stated that the research team has been organised according to different types of Khmer martial arts, drawing from intangible sources such as living human heritage, and tangible sources, including manuscripts, artefacts, inscriptions on ancient temples, and natural sources like research on yantra and magic. On this occasion, the senior minister also updated Samdech Thipadei on preparations for the second Khmer Mixed Martial Arts Championship, the "Samdech Thipadei Trophy," scheduled for late 2025.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei expressed his high appreciation for the research commission’s dedication and accomplishments. He emphasised that Khmer martial arts are a valuable and irreplaceable heritage, requiring continuous efforts in research, documentation, dissemination, and implementation to ensure their long-term preservation.

The premier further stressed that research must be accurate and supported by historical evidence, as this initiative serves as the most important official compilation of Khmer ancient martial arts. He urged the committee to thoroughly study and classify each form of martial art to recover lost and endangered traditions while sustaining those currently practised. Additionally, he encouraged wider dissemination of Khmer martial arts to increase public awareness and appreciation.

Regarding the organisation of the second Khmer Mixed Martial Arts Championship, "Samdech Thipadei Trophy" in 2025, he urged the committee to enhance the competition's procedures and promote greater participation from all disciplines of Khmer martial arts, ensuring that more Cambodians can learn about and take pride in their martial arts heritage.
