Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 6 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications to address service quality issues in certain areas, particularly in Boreys, where connectivity problems persist.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Feb. 6) at the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications' conference to review 2020-2024 work on the journey toward digital transformation, and outline future directions.
“The service system remains weak in certain locations. In some areas, particularly within Boreys, it feels as if the internet disappears entirely. Please work with service providers to improve and resolve these issues, ensuring greater reliability of our internet and telephone networks,” the premier underscored.
In this regard, Samdech Thipadei urged the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to take a comprehensive approach to resolving these service shortcomings for the benefit of the public.
According to the ministry’s development plan, efforts are currently underway to enhance digital connectivity infrastructure, including telephone antenna masts, cable networks, and both submarine and terrestrial fibre optic cables, as follows:
- There are currently 11,511 telephone antenna masts. The ministry plans to construct an additional 3,674 masts, bringing the total to 6,355 antenna stations by 2027.
- In Phnom Penh: 416 out of the planned 1,000 additional antenna masts have been constructed. The ministry has also deployed nine working groups to inspect buildings of six storeys or higher to enhance telephone and internet services.
- In the provinces: 192 out of the planned 394 antenna masts have been constructed in Takeo, Kandal, and Siem Reap. Further installations will take place in provincial and district capitals, urban areas, and protected sites across various provinces, including remote tourist destinations, using the Universal Service Obligation Fund.
