Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 6 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that digital systems are becoming increasingly integrated into the daily lives of Cambodian people, speaking on Thursday (Feb. 6) at the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications' conference to review 2020-2024 work, and outline future directions.
Prime Minister Hun Manet underscored, “Across the country, from Phnom Penh to remote border areas, I have met people from all walks of life—including soldiers stationed at the border. The other day, I met a soldier in a very remote area, and he asked for a selfie to post on Facebook. This demonstrates how digital technology has become an essential part of our daily lives.”
On that occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also recalled that in the past, people relied heavily on computers. He shared his own experience of working at the World Bank in Mongolia, where one day, due to a computer malfunction, no work could be done because all the data was stored on the computer. Every day, he worked exclusively on a computer. But now, we have shifted from relying on computers to depending on mobile phones.
At the conference, Minister of Post and Telecommunications Chea Vandeth underlined the telecommunications sector’s significant contributions to digital connectivity, which serves as the foundation for digital transformation. Over the past five years, the ministry has made notable achievements, including the development and implementation of legal frameworks to enhance governance, facilitate business operations, and protect users' rights.
Additionally, the ministry has issued a total of 59 telecommunications operating licenses, including four for telephone services, two for submarine fibre optics, five for terrestrial fibre optics, and 39 for Internet services. Cambodia currently has approximately 20.6 million telephone service users and around 19 million Internet users.
