Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 6 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced a decisive measure to combat online fraud and human trafficking in Cambodia by establishing a high-level committee, which he will personally lead, alongside the Deputy Prime Minister and relevant ministries and institutions.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Feb. 6) at the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications' conference to review 2020-2024 work on the journey toward digital transformation, and outline future directions.

Samdech Thipadei added that the fight against human trafficking and online fraud is an ongoing effort by the authorities, with continuous crackdowns and the deportation of foreign offenders. However, as online fraud continues to threaten social security and tarnish Cambodia’s national reputation, stronger preventive and enforcement measures are required.

“In this new mandate, as we enter the new year, we are preparing to upgrade the national inter-ministerial mechanism, which will be led by the Prime Minister and include several Deputy Prime Ministers, such as Neth Savoeun, Sar Sokha, Tea Seiha, Prak Sokhonn, Keut Rith, and other relevant ministries and institutions. The task force to combat online fraud will comprise the police, military police, and armed forces to address this issue effectively, as it directly impacts our country’s reputation,” the premier underscored.

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei urged municipal and provincial administrations, law enforcement agencies, military police, and the armed forces to strengthen cooperation in preventing and combating online fraud and human trafficking.

On the occasion, the premier noted that online fraud and human trafficking are not problems unique to Cambodia but are also prevalent across ASEAN and globally. For Cambodia, the government has continuously taken action since the previous mandates, and joint efforts must be further strengthened to eliminate these crimes.
