Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 10 – On 8 February 2025, the Singapore Embassy hosted its first-ever Lunar New Year reception, welcoming over 160 Singaporeans, Singapore Permanent Residents and their families. The festive gathering provided an opportunity for members of the Singaporean community to reconnect, celebrate shared traditions, and strengthen bonds in the spirit of unity and togetherness.

The occasion also marked the start of a year-long series of events and activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Cambodia. Planned highlights include talks, art workshops, and community outreach, aimed at deepening the understanding and appreciation of the strong ties between the two nations.

Adding to the vibrancy of the event, nine tables were set up to showcase Singapore-run businesses in Cambodia. The participating companies were Phillip Bank, Sing-Specialist Medical Centre, Dim Sum Emperor, Dara Hotels Group, LOJEL Cambodia, Kellinya Gourmet, Invictus International School, Himawari Hotel Apartments, and Singapore Medical Center. As Cambodia’s second largest investor in 2023, the showcase highlights the contributions of the Singapore business sector to Cambodia’s economic growth and development.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Teo Lay Cheng emphasized the importance of community and collaboration. She said: “This inaugural reception is not just a celebration of Lunar New Year but also a reflection of the strength and resilience of the Singaporean community in Cambodia. It is heartwarming to see so many families come together, sharing the joy of common traditions and creating memories that bind us closer as a community.” She added, “Today’s lunch is especially meaningful as we usher in the Year of the Snake, a symbol of wisdom, and resilience. I hope that these qualities will imbue in us, a deep sense of confidence and purpose in the year to come.” The Ambassador also encouraged the Singapore community to actively support upcoming events and activities to commemorate six decades of bilateral ties between Singapore and Cambodia.

Pauline Tan, CEO of Sing-Specialist Medical Centre, described the reception as “a heartwarming and festive occasion that truly brings a sense of home to Singaporeans.” Christian missionary Prasad Bellan echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of such gatherings: “For Singaporeans living overseas, especially those who do not travel home frequently, this event is incredibly meaningful. We are delighted to be part of it.” Principal of Invictus International School Martin Koh also highlighted the growing Singaporean community in Cambodia, stating, “It is wonderful to see so many Singaporeans coming together with our Khmer friends. As our community continues to expand, we look forward to contributing positively to Cambodian society.” Hashim Alkaff, Chief E-Channels Banking Officer at Phillip Bank, reflected on the emotional significance of the occasion: “Being away from home during this festive period can be bittersweet, but the Embassy’s Lunar New Year celebration brought a sense of warmth and familiarity.
