Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 15 – The situation regarding wildfires in Cambodia is not as it appears on FIRMS (Fire Information for Resource Management System).
The FIRMS website displays red hotspots across Cambodia, which might suggest that the country’s forests are burning almost everywhere.
However, the General Department of Nature Protection Areas at the Ministry of Environment confirmed that, according to data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC), the number of suspected hotspots in Cambodia on 14 February 2025 had decreased to 101.
In response, national and sub-national institutions, especially the Department of Environment, have been regularly conducting inspections, verifying incidents, and extinguishing fires to prevent further outbreaks.
The fires in question are not serious forest fires but rather involve burning garbage, stubble, grass, and rice fields. The General Department of Nature Protection Areas has urged the public to remain vigilant and refrain from burning waste, straw, grass, and rice stubble, as these activities can negatively impact public health, the environment, and biodiversity.
