Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 17 – US President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports into the US in another move to support domestic production. Just last week, Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports to the US, adding to existing tariffs on China. Meanwhile, the president still threatens to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
Since Trump’s first term (2017–2021), China has lost its position as the top importer to the US to Mexico. In 2023, the neighbouring country to the south exported $476 billion to the US, compared to $427 billion from China and $421 billion from Canada.
Electronic products make up the largest share of US imports (20.2%), followed by transportation equipment (15.1%) and chemicals (13.5%).
