Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 20 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that Cambodia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita has increased nearly ninefold, rising from approximately USD 310 in 2000 to around USD 2,713 in 2024.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Feb. 20) at the opening of the Cambodian Social Protection Week 2025 and launching of the National Social Protection Policy Framework 2024-2035 at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel.

“The GDP per capita has increased nearly nine times, from approximately USD 310 in 2000 to around USD 2,713 in 2024, while the poverty rate has continued to decline significantly,” the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei underlined that the primary policy priority of the Royal Government of Cambodia in all its mandates is to maintain peace and ensure complete political stability, which are prerequisites for the country’s economic growth and development.

Indeed, Cambodia has been reaping the benefits of peace, political stability, and macroeconomic stability, enabling the country to sustain an average economic growth rate of around 6 per cent over the past decade, despite the negative impacts of the COVID19 crisis and other past challenges. Maintaining this level of growth has transformed Cambodia into a lower-middle-income country since 2015.

On the occasion, the premier highlighted that economic growth, peace, prosperity, and political stability are essential prerequisites that allow the Royal Government to implement policies and strategies, as well as carry out crucial reforms to restore and develop the country, yielding results worthy of pride.

Samdech Thipadei added that the fruits of economic growth have been equitably distributed through investments in the health and education sectors, as well as the social protection system. He reiterated that the Royal Government recognises these investments as crucial contributions to building a fair and harmonious society, serving as a foundation for national development.
