Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 26 – Cambodian PM Hun Manet confirmed that retired teachers rehired on contracts in public schools will receive salaries alongside pensions, but not double pay.
The premier spoke on Wednesday (Feb. 26) at the closing of the MOEYS’s 2024 annual meeting at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia.
On that occasion, the prime minister underlined that retired teachers should be allowed to help address staffing shortages in public schools.
Samdech Thipadei clarified that rehiring retired teachers on contract does not mean double salaries. He noted that if they worked in private schools, they would still receive both a salary and their pension. The government's goal is to keep experienced educators in public schools rather than losing them to private institutions.
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei instructed the Ministry of Public Service and the Ministry of Education to compile comprehensive data on teachers at all levels to identify schools facing teacher shortages among Cambodia’s more than 10,000 educational institutions.
