Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 26 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the Baccalaureate exam serves as a measure of students’ abilities. However, the primary focus should be on ensuring the overall quality of education, regardless of whether the exam is maintained in the future.

The premier spoke on Wednesday (Feb. 26) at the closing of the MOEYS’s 2024 annual meeting at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia.

On this occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet encouraged the Ministry of Education to strengthen education at all levels, from primary and secondary to higher education.

Samdech Thipadei continued, “Someone asked me if I plan to abolish the high school diploma in the future. I said, whether it is abolished or not is not the main issue. The exam serves as a test to assess our level. If we are confident in the strength of our education system from the ground up, students should be able to pass semester and annual exams without issue. However, if we are unsure, we must conduct proper assessments so that students, families, and teachers can understand the level of quality and whether we meet the necessary standards.”

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet urged the Ministry of Education and educational institutions to collaborate in advancing STEAM education. This initiative aims to equip students with essential 21st-century skills and align education with labour market needs. He highlighted the importance of developing technological and practical skills, enhancing training programs, and adapting to the evolving job market.
