Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 26 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport, along with relevant institutions, to review and ease the strict conditions for teachers requesting transfers to different teaching locations.
The premier spoke on Wednesday (Feb. 26) at the closing of the MOEYS’s 2024 annual meeting at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, “I ask for clear conditions that make it easier to transfer. Transfers of academic and educational staff, deputy directors, and directors—I do not oppose them. However, when it comes to transferring teachers, I request fewer restrictions. The conditions should not be too strict, but there must still be a balance.”
In this regard, Samdech Thipadei also called for teachers' understanding regarding these transfer conditions, highlighting that they are necessary to uphold the responsibility of ensuring quality education for students. He noted that during a recent visit to a mountainous area with the Ministry of Education, local residents raised concerns about teacher shortages. While school buildings can be constructed, they cannot function effectively without sufficient teachers.
Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined the need to find solutions to address these challenges, both for teachers in underserved areas and those in other locations. He also suggested that qualified retired teachers be invited to volunteer and share their expertise, while existing teachers should strive to maintain balance in the system.
Additionally, the premier expressed his appreciation for teachers who voluntarily teach extra hours to support students, acknowledging the Royal Government’s ongoing encouragement and additional support to enhance education at the local level.
