Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 26 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined the need for the prompt implementation of the principles he has put forward, speaking on Wednesday (Feb. 26) at the closing of the MOEYS’s 2024 annual meeting at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia.
Samdech Thipadei has instructed the capital and provincial authorities to prioritise the Department of Education in teacher recruitment while ensuring compliance with the Ministry of Education's regulations.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underscored, “This must be done in one step and quickly. I want it implemented this year so that it can take effect in 2026. Don’t wait too long.”
Premier Hun Manet has also called for the establishment of a structured study period to create a framework for contract teachers, particularly primary school teachers. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Service will discuss a study period ranging from three to four years.
In addition, Prime Minister Hun Manet has introduced a policy to rehire retired teachers, allowing them to teach while receiving both a salary and their retirement benefits. He has also instructed a thorough review of the conditions for teachers requesting transfers to different teaching locations.
Samdech Thipadei highlighted the significant impact of losing a single teacher, stating that it affects hundreds of students. He pointed to rapid population growth as a key factor necessitating solutions in the education sector.
The premier also encouraged the Ministry of Education to strengthen education at all levels—primary, secondary, and higher education—highlighting the importance of ownership in educational initiatives. He underlined that reforms should not be dictated solely by financial incentives but must be carried out with a sense of responsibility and commitment.
