Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 27 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his support for foreign film companies to shoot at the Angkor Archaeological Park and other locations across Cambodia.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Feb. 27) at the closing of the 2024 annual meeting of the Ministry of Tourism at OCIC, Phnom Penh.
Samdech Thipadei added that such productions play a crucial role in promoting the country, particularly its tourism sector, without requiring expenditure on hiring media organisations to broadcast from Cambodia.
“In the past, some online-related film productions have portrayed Cambodia negatively. However, we need more films that highlight Cambodia’s safety, showcase our beautiful land and good-hearted people, and encourage investment. There is no need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to invite them; they can simply drive in, and we facilitate the process. All ministries and institutions should work towards this objective,” the premier underscored.
At the same time, the prime minister instructed the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, and provincial and municipal administrations to collaborate in promoting Cambodia as a film destination. He also encouraged the production of international commercials, which would further elevate Cambodia’s profile on the global stage in a swift and effective manner.
According to Samdech Thipadei, another foreign film company is expected to begin filming in Cambodia in the coming days. He noted that these companies invest significantly in travel and equipment transportation to Cambodia, and therefore, adjustments should be made to prevent losses for those unable to proceed with their projects.
Samdech Thipadei’s instructions follow repeated incidents where film content approvals were initially granted by the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts before production, only for the ministries to request a re-examination afterwards, creating difficulties for filmmakers.
In this regard, the premier stated that he would soon meet with industry representatives to discuss strategies for strengthening the sector, particularly through securing funding to support Cambodian cinema. He stressed that the film industry holds immense potential in promoting Cambodia internationally and that sustained efforts are necessary to maximise this opportunity.
