Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 27 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his intention to develop tourism packages that promote community products, suggesting that each tourist be given a traditional Khmer scarf (krama) as part of their visit. He explained that if one million tourists each receive a scarf, it would directly support the production of one million scarves.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Feb. 27) at the closing of the 2024 annual meeting of the Ministry of Tourism at OCIC, Phnom Penh.
Samdech Thipadei also recommended establishing an intermediary institutional mechanism to promote the production of Khmer souvenirs and connect local producers with the market and tourists. This initiative aims to ensure that souvenir shops and night markets offer a diverse range of high-quality, appealing, and reasonably priced Khmer products.
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei encouraged young people, social media content creators, media outlets, and the general public to continue their efforts in promoting the Royal Government's achievements and Cambodia’s tourism destinations.
Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined that Cambodian temples are cultural treasures of global significance and should be further promoted to attract more visitors. He also urged tour guides to provide accurate historical information to prevent misinformation.
Samdech Thipadei instructed relevant ministries and institutions to monitor social media discussions regarding the history, construction, and narratives surrounding temples to prevent misinterpretations that may cause confusion.
The premier also expressed his support for the Ministry of Tourism in preparing the National Tourism Development Strategy 2026-2035.
