Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 5 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet advised that “Sangkran” events be held in all capitals and provinces nationwide, in addition to the “Angkor Sangkran” event in Siem Reap.

The premier spoke on Wednesday (Mar. 5) at the 27th National Culture Day at the Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Centre.

“This year, at Angkor Wat, we are organising Angkor Sangkran along with performing arts, but nationwide, we must expand these celebrations at the provincial and district levels. We should also encourage more participation in traditional games to preserve and promote our culture,” the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei noted that during Khmer New Year, water-splashing is not prohibited, but he urged people to actively participate in popular games as much as possible. He highlighted that this not only brings enjoyment but also plays a vital role in cultural preservation. At the same time, he expressed hope that “Sangkran” in Cambodia would soon be recognised as part of the country’s intangible cultural heritage.

On this occasion, Samdech Thipadei recalled that last year, he greatly enjoyed playing traditional games and participating in water-splashing during the Khmer New Year celebrations. He expressed his hope that this year, and in the years to come, even more people across Cambodia will take part in these cultural activities.
