Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 5 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his hope that traditional Khmer folk games will once again be played during the Khmer New Year celebrations, speaking on Wednesday (Mar. 5) at the 27th National Culture Day at the Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Samdech Thipadei noted that Khmer folk games were once an integral part of the Khmer New Year festivities. However, in recent years, younger generations have primarily associated the holiday with water cannons and soap bubbles.

Samdech Thipadei also expressed his hope that in the upcoming Khmer New Year, young people, including artists and performers, will take the lead in reviving and promoting Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined that the Angkor Sangkran celebration this year will include the revival of Khmer folk games. He instructed provincial and municipal authorities across the country to actively organise and encourage participation in these traditional games, ensuring their popularity and promoting Cambodia’s cultural arts to both local and international visitors.
