Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 5 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet praised the transformation of ancient Khmer art forms and clothing to make them more appealing while highlighting the importance of preserving their original essence and national identity.
The premier spoke on Wednesday (Mar. 5) at the 27th National Culture Day at the Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Samdech Thipadei stated that preserving traditional culture does not mean remaining stagnant or avoiding modernisation. Instead, he encouraged innovation and the use of new technologies to enhance the appeal of Khmer cultural arts while ensuring minimal impact on their original characteristics. In this regard, he urged the Ministry of Culture and Fine Art to expand its efforts and introduce new initiatives to modernise the cultural sector, particularly through increased cooperation and learning from leading countries in the cultural industry.
The prime minister noted that in recent years, certain Khmer art forms and traditional clothing, such as garments made from Khmer checkered fabric, have been adapted to be more visually appealing. He pointed out that the shirt he was wearing was made from Khmer checkered fabric, demonstrating how traditional elements can be incorporated into modern styles without losing their Khmer identity.
"I commend this creative work in all its forms. We have contemporary art and various performances that highlight our culture on the international stage. Transforming traditional fabric into modern clothing is one way to showcase our heritage," Samdech Thipadei underscored.
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei underlined that while modernisation is necessary to keep up with societal progress, it must not come at the cost of losing Cambodia’s national identity. He reiterated that this balance is a crucial responsibility.
The premier also expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture and Fine Art and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs for promptly providing guidance whenever creative changes extended beyond the original form of Khmer cultural traditions.
