Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 14 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful negotiations in safeguarding the nation's territorial integrity and sovereignty. However, he warned that Cambodia would not hesitate to respond with military force if faced with an armed violation, emphasizing the country's readiness to defend itself at any time.
The premier spoke on Friday (Mar. 14) during the closing ceremony of the 2024 Cambodian Oknha Association annual meeting at Premier Centre Sen Sok in Phnom Penh.
Prime Minister Hun Manet stated: “Our conduct operates as a royal government, prioritizing peaceful solutions based on law, diplomacy, and international regulations. However, we remain prepared at all times. If armed forces attempt to invade Cambodian territory, Cambodia reserve the right to defend its sovereignty by all means necessary, including military force. I have said this before, and I reaffirm it today.”
Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that Cambodia has never ignored territorial issues. Citing 2008, he noted that while the Royal Government did not publicize the conflict on social media, it responded immediately with armed force when Thai troops invaded.
Addressing tensions over Ta Muen Thom and Preah Vihear temples, Samdech Thipadei stated that Cambodia will not engage in public rhetoric but will respond decisively, including with military force, if provoked. He dismissed concerns over Thai protestors at Ta Muen Thom, noting they were handled by Thai authorities, and refuted false media reports, which Thailand’s defence minister also denied.
Emphasizing Cambodia’s commitment to peace, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet stressed that war brings only losses. He referenced both Cambodia’s 1962 legal victory at The Hague and its 2008 armed conflict as examples of its balanced approach to defence.
Separately, he welcomed patriotic Cambodians abroad to stand at Ta Muen Thom temple in person rather than protesting online.
