Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 14 – Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen called on tycoons to invest in the agricultural sector, including initiatives to purchase rice for resale to workers at affordable prices and the establishment of cashew processing factories, among other projects.
Samdech Techo spoke on Friday (Mar. 14) during a solidarity dinner with the Cambodian Oknha Association at Premier Centre Sen Sok in Phnom Penh.
“I urge the Oknha Association, which comprises many investors, to support the agricultural sector by stabilising the price of rice and other agricultural products. The price of rice, in particular, often faces challenges,” the Senate president underscored.
Samdech Techo highlighted that during times of rice crises, when farmers need to sell their produce, tycoons should step in to assist by purchasing rice. This rice can then be processed and distributed to the public or their workers at reasonable prices.
Additionally, Samdech Techo Hun Sen stressed the importance of creating added value through agricultural production. Cambodia is rich in agricultural resources, such as cashews, and has become the world’s leading producer of fresh cashews.
He added that expanding the cultivation of industrial crops like cashews would not only improve farmers’ livelihoods but also contribute to increased forest cover, ensuring Cambodia’s environmental sustainability. This approach, he noted, should be integrated to transform Cambodia into a hub for agro-industry and agro-commerce.
