Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 21 – Cambodian Senate President, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his desire for Senate elections to follow a format similar to that of the National Assembly elections. He urged a review of the system to ensure accountability and clearly define which senators are assigned to which constituencies.

Samdech Techo presided over a ceremony conferring the five-star general rank on former Defence Minister Tea Banh and former Minister of Inspection Men Sam An on Friday (Mar. 21).

“We are currently exploring the possibility of establishing accountability for senators within their respective electorates, as is the case with the National Assembly. At present, we do not know which senator is responsible for which region, as some regions encompass four to five provinces. Should we introduce Senate constituencies and reform the system so that each candidate is clearly designated to one of the 25 constituencies? This is an issue that requires thorough study,” the Senate president underscored.

Samdech Techo added that upon being invited to serve as President of the Senate, he observed that senators lacked clarity regarding their assigned regions. As a result, a review of the current system is necessary to implement reforms.

He further emphasised that these changes would ensure that each senator is accountable for a specific region, allowing them to provide direct support to commune and Sangkat council members, as well as assist local communities. Without such a system, senators may not be effectively engaged in addressing issues at the grassroots level.
