Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 24 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet outlined six recommendations aimed at fostering the growth and development of the Khmer-Muslim community. He reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to ensuring broad religious freedom and upholding religious harmony.
The premier spoke on Monday (Mar. 24) at the 2025 Ramadan Iftar dinner in Phnom Penh.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined that the Royal Government remains dedicated to protecting religious freedom for all citizens by promoting unity among different faiths, preventing religious discrimination, and ensuring that religion is not exploited for commercial purposes that could lead to religious tensions.
To support the further development of the Khmer-Muslim community, the premier outlined the following recommendations:
1. Khmer-Muslim leaders and all Muslims continue collaborating in solidarity and friendship maintaining positive relationships with other religious communities at both national and international levels, guided by the principles of racial and religious harmonisation.
2. Khmer-Muslim leaders and all Muslims are encouraged to continue organising and leading religious affairs in Khmer-Muslim communities through close collaboration with the Ministry of Cult and Religion and relevant authorities at all levels.
3. Competent authorities must facilitate the construction of schools and mosques (Masjid-Surau) for Khmer-Muslims by strictly adhering to the notification on the designation and construction of sites for religious practices in villages and areas where Khmer-Muslim communities reside, in compliance with Islamic religious law and regulations set out
and implemented by relevant competent institutions.
4. Khmer-Muslim leaders and all Muslims are encouraged to enhance social activities through humanitarian work, welfare, education, development, and religious practices, grounded in the principles of the Islamic faith and in respect of the Constitution.
5. Khmer-Muslim leaders and all Muslims are encouraged to maintain their support and trust in the leadership of the Royal Government of Cambodia, which fully guarantees the right to religious freedom for Muslims in Cambodia, by fostering solidarity with practitioners of other religions to promote racial and religious harmonisation.
6. Khmer-Muslim leaders and all Muslims are encouraged to continue to cooperate at both national and international levels to mobilise funding and technical support for the development of the Khmer-Muslim communities, while avoiding exploitation of religion for commercial purposes, which could cause unwanted problems, disunity, and extremism within the communities.
