Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 31 – The Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training confirmed the death of a Cambodian worker in the Thailand earthquake.
According to a press release seen by Fresh News on Monday (Mar. 31), the victim has been identified as Meas Sawang, 23, a male resident of Malai district, Banteay Meanchey province.
The Ministry of Labour’s press release added, “The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training is deeply saddened and shocked by this tragic news. In this moment of great sorrow, we, the leaders and civil servants of the ministry, extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereaved family who lost their beloved child in the earthquake. We pray for the eternal peace of Meas Sawang.”
Following the earthquake, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet advised the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Cambodian Embassy in Thailand, and the Embassy Attaché to visit the scene, gather information, and monitor the situation closely.
On 31 March, the Cambodian Ambassador to Thailand Hun Saroeun personally visited the hospital where the body was kept to join the deceased’s relatives in offering prayers to the monks, following Buddhist traditions, before the body’s transport to its hometown. Meanwhile, the ministry’s working group, the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Administration, the Malai District Administration, and relevant officials at the border checkpoint have been assisting in processing necessary documents, receiving the body, and arranging a funeral ceremony in accordance with Buddhist customs at the deceased’s home.
The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training will provide further updates upon any official confirmation from Thai authorities.
