Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 7 – Following the recent earthquakes in several Southeast Asian countries, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for enhanced cooperation and strengthened technical implementation in the construction of physical infrastructure in both public and private to reduce the risks posed by natural disasters and climate change, similar to those experienced by other countries in the region.
The premier spoke on Monday (Apr. 7) at the inauguration of the USD 37 million Morodok Techo flyover in Phnom Penh.
“In recent days, several countries, including those in Southeast Asia, have experienced earthquakes that caused hardship, building collapses, property damage, and significant impacts on citizens’ lives. In this regard, I would like to instruct the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), provincial and capital administrations, and relevant ministries and institutions to enhance collaboration and strengthen the technical implementation of physical infrastructure projects in both the public and private sectors, to reduce risks associated with natural disasters and climate change, as seen in neighbouring countries,” the premier underscored.
According to Samdech Thipadei, the death toll from one of the deadliest earthquakes in Myanmar has surpassed 3,000.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet added that since the beginning of his mandate, he has instructed the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction to inspect ageing buildings that may pose risks to residents. Samdech Thipadei also urged construction companies not to compromise construction quality, as doing so could endanger public safety.
The premier continued that the Angkor Chey building, which had deteriorated significantly, has been repaired and fenced off to prevent public access.
