Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 7 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed hope that Phnom Penh will one day have underwater roads to enhance connectivity across rivers. He noted that Cambodia has already built numerous large bridges over rivers and estuaries to facilitate transportation and the movement of goods.
The premier spoke on Monday (Apr. 7) at the inauguration of the USD 37 million Morodok Techo flyover in Phnom Penh.
Following the achievement of complete peace, the Royal Government of Cambodia has prioritised the development of a wide range of infrastructure projects, including roads, railways, airports, bridges, river crossings, flyovers, and ports, to improve transportation and ease public travel.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined that the government cannot stop people from buying cars or motorbikes, but what it can do is expand and improve road infrastructure to accommodate growing transportation needs.
Samdech Thipadei underscored, “I’ve started thinking about studying the idea. In the future, I hope we can have an underwater road to cross the river. That’s the vision.”
Currently, people traveling from Arey Ksat to Phnom Penh must rely on ferry services. The premier affirmed that the Royal Government will not retreat from its goals but will instead work proactively. He added that the Arey Ksat area will undergo further development with improved infrastructure, better access, and more high-rise buildings, while the construction of the Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge is scheduled to begin soon.
Samdech Thipadei also revealed that two to three additional river bridges will be inaugurated successively to further ease public travel. As the country continues to develop, the Royal Government remains committed to expanding physical infrastructure to meet the actual needs of the people.
In addition, Samdech Thipadei expressed pride in the achievements made before and after the recent election period, highlighting five key milestones. These include the groundbreaking ceremony for a 50-meter road connecting the 60-meter road to Dangkor, the construction of the Chak Angre Krom Bridge to Prek Pra, the groundbreaking for a twin flyover, the inauguration of a wastewater treatment plant, and the inauguration of the Morodok Techo Flyover.
It should be noted that Cambodia currently has eight flyovers in operation, including the Kbal Thnal Flyover, 7 Makara Flyover (also known as the Lok Sangha Flyover), Stung Meanchey Flyover, Takhmao Flyover, Phsar Dei Huy Flyover, Chom Chao Circular Flyover, and Russey Keo Flyover. Notably, the eighth flyover—the Morodok Techo Flyover—is a three-story structure located at the intersection of Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard, Preah Monivong Boulevard, and Yothapol Khemarak Phoumin Boulevard (Street 271) in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey and Chamkar Mon districts.
