Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 9 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed the administrations of the four northeastern provinces to clearly demarcate industrial and tourism zones to unlock the development potential of each region.

The premier spoke on Wednesday (Apr. 9) at the official launching of the “Special Programme to Promote Investment in the Four Northeastern Province of Cambodia 2025-2028” at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel.

Samdech Thipadei underlined that Kratie, Stung Treng, Ratanakiri, and Mondulkiri must clearly define these zones to ensure sustainable development and the effective utilization of their respective resources.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, “I urge the four provinces—especially those rich in natural resources and potential, like Mondulkiri—to adopt flexible zoning strategies. Preserve areas for tourism and nature, and designate appropriate locations for industrial development. Do not build factories in the mountains—leave certain areas for tourism, others for nature, and others for industry.”

Samdech Thipadei added that the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction must prioritise land use mapping and expedite preparations based on a comprehensive Master Plan. He warned that without proactive planning, provinces like Mondulkiri—which is rich in natural tourism resources—risk becoming disorganised areas where factories and other developments disrupt the natural landscape.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet underscored that the four northeastern provinces must pursue multi-sectoral development, focusing on three key sectors including agriculture, agro-industry, and tourism, to drive economic growth and improve livelihoods.
