Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 9 – ADB Country Director for Cambodia Jyotsana Varma praised Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet for effectively addressing key issues, particularly the tariff negotiation with the United States, highlighting the maturity of Cambodia’s diplomatic approach which has fostered mutual understanding between both nations.

Varma made her remarks during the Asian Development Outlook (ADO) Cambodia outreach programme held on 9 April 2025.

“Regarding the tariff negotiation with the US, Cambodia’s negotiation style reflects a very appropriate and mature response, aiming to promote peace and understanding between the two countries. Personally, I cannot definitively assess how suitable the outcomes of the negotiation are,” Varma underscored.

She added that the outcomes of the tariff negotiation remain uncertain.

It is worth noting that the US President Donald Trump has decided to impose a tariff of 49 per cent on goods imported from Cambodia. On 4 April 2025, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet sent a letter to Trump requesting negotiation on the implementation of tariffs. In the letter, Cambodia offers a reduction of tariffs from 35 per cent to 5 per cent for 19 tariff lines.
