Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 10 — The Royal Government of Cambodia has received a positive response from the United States regarding its request to initiate negotiation to address recent tariff increases, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Commerce on Thursday. (10 April).

The negotiation will be conducted soon between an Ad Hoc interministerial-institutional negotiation task force, led by First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), and US Trade Representative (USTR).

The Ministry of Commerce stated, “The Royal Government of Cambodia has received a positive response from the US following our official request for negotiation to achieve a mutual solution. This request was formally conveyed through a letter from Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, dated 4 April 2024, as well as a letter from Cham Nimul, Minister of Commerce, on the same date. These communications expressed Cambodia's good faith to negotiate a mutual solution and commitment to immediately reduce the tariff from 35 per cent to 5 per cent on 19 categories of US goods imported into Cambodia.”

Notably, on 9 April 2025, US President Donald J. Trump has authorised a temporary suspension of the reciprocal tariff for 90 days. During this period, the reciprocal tariff will be lowered to 10 per cent for all countries that have officially sought to negotiate with the United States—including Cambodia. In the case of Cambodia, the original 49 per cent reciprocal tariff will be temporarily reduced to only 10 per cent.
