Tboung Khmum (FN), Apr. 12 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that the relationship between Cambodia and China remains strong and unchanged.

He cited significant developments including the newly inaugurated Siem Reap International Airport, the construction of numerous roads and bridges, and the official visit of the Chinese President as clear evidence of the enduring partnership.

The premier spoke on Saturday (Apr. 12) during the inauguration of National Road 71C connecting Tbong Khmum-Kampong Cham.

“In recent months, I have seen various foreign media and analysts—including some Cambodian commentators—speculate on the state of Cambodia-China relations. I am unsure of the sources of their information, but they seem to believe that since the new government took office, our ties with China have declined, that mutual trust has eroded, and that assistance has lessened,” the premier underscored.

“I do not know where this data comes from. Over the past 17 months, we’ve achieved significant milestones. I attended the inauguration of the new Siem Reap International Airport and Ring Road No. 3. We also honoured the Chinese president by naming a road in recognition of his contributions to Cambodia’s development. Some people question this, but President Xi Jinping has played a major role as a partner, so organising a naming ceremony as a gesture of appreciation is entirely appropriate,” Samdech Thipadei continued.

The premier added that events such as the current inauguration also reflect the ongoing strength of Cambodia-China relations. “China remains the top investor in Cambodia in 2024. This relationship has not changed, and we will continue to deepen it. Cambodia maintains diplomatic relations with all countries, but our partnership with China is grounded in 67 years of cooperation, and it remains strong.”

The premier confirmed that President Xi Jinping is scheduled for a state visit to Cambodia in the near future, which he said would be yet another sign of the unshaken bilateral ties.

“To international journalists analysing the situation, I encourage you to continue your evaluations. What is undeniable is that Cambodia-China relations remain solid—built on mutual support, respect for sovereignty and rights, and a commitment to non-interference. This is the same approach we apply to our relationships with other countries around the world,” Samdech Thipadei underscored.

Samdech Thipadei added, “Today’s event stands as further evidence of the continuous strengthening of Cambodia-China relations for the benefit of our people. China’s ongoing support for infrastructure development in Cambodia continues to bolster our economy and improve the lives of our citizens. I want to underscore that.”
