Kampot (FN), Apr. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that while the Royal Government of Cambodia maintains strong ties with China, such cooperation reflects state-to-state relations. He emphasised that Cambodia’s foreign policy remains grounded in engaging with all nations based on mutual respect for independence, sovereignty, and shared interests. Cambodia is not aligned with any particular bloc or country.
The premier spoke on Monday (Apr. 21) during the inauguration of the Kampot International Tourism Port.
Samdech Thipadei said that the recent two-day state visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Cambodia should be a source of national pride, as it demonstrates that although Cambodia is a small country, it enjoys equal diplomatic relations with global powers and nations worldwide. Notably, Cambodia is among just three Southeast Asian countries President Xi has visited in recent years.
“We maintain diplomatic relations with countries across the globe. This is Cambodia’s consistent political principle, based on respect for independence, sovereignty, and mutual benefit. I would like to reiterate that Cambodia is not a satellite of any nation,” the premier underscored.
Samdech Thipadei added that this statement serves to clarify the political position of the Royal Government to the Cambodian people. He addressed the recent criticisms made by a small number of individuals regarding President Xi’s state visit, stating that the visit itself sends a clear and positive message about the enduring and strategic partnership between Cambodia and China.
Samdech Thipadei noted that while some analysts claim there is a "deficit" in Cambodia-China relations, such assertions are unfounded and insufficient to warrant any change in the current path.
On this occasion, the premier also urged politicians not to let personal animosity lead to attacks on the families of their political opponents. He called for mutual respect despite differing political views and advised against exploiting the hardships of the people for personal political gain.
Samdech Thipadei reiterated that none of the allegations made by the opposition have materialised. On the contrary, Cambodia and China have agreed to uphold each other’s sovereignty and national unity. Cambodia retains full ownership of its domestic and foreign policy direction.
It is worth noting that on 18 April 2025, Cambodia and China issued a joint statement outlining numerous agreements, including the advancement of the Cambodia-China Community with Shared Future and collaboration on global development, security, and civilisational initiatives. Notably, the third point of the joint declaration affirms that both sides support each other’s core interests, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and jointly oppose external interference in internal affairs.
