Kampot (FN), Apr. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed strong disapproval of ongoing negative rhetoric toward China, highlighting the contradiction that many of those voicing discontent are themselves beneficiaries of Chinese investment.

Samdech Thipadei noted that some individuals who criticise China are, ironically, using infrastructure built with Chinese loans or earning high salaries from Chinese-owned businesses in Cambodia.

Samdech Thipadei underscored, “Some people travel on highways built with Chinese loans and still curse China. Some work in factories owned by Chinese companies, earning hundreds or even thousands of dollars, and yet criticise the government for attracting Chinese investment. I do not understand. This sentiment comes right after the state visit of President Xi Jinping, who arrived shortly after the Khmer New Year.”

In contrast, Prime Minister Hun Manet urged the Cambodian public to take pride in the fact that Cambodia, a relatively small nation, maintains equal and friendly relations with major global powers. President Xi’s visit included three countries, Viet Nam, Malaysia, and Cambodia, underscoring Cambodia’s significance on the regional stage.

The premier firmly rejected claims of deteriorating Cambodia-China relations, reaffirming that Cambodia’s foreign policy remains one of neutrality and inclusivity. We do not exclude any country—we maintain relations with all. Our political stance is based on the principles of independence, sovereignty, and mutual respect.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei underlined that the invaluable role of China as a key development partner for Cambodia. The Chinese government has provided extensive support for Cambodia’s economic and social development, particularly through concessional loans and grant aid for critical infrastructure projects.

To date, China has contributed over USD 3 billion toward improving Cambodia’s road networks and connectivity throughout the country and the region. On behalf of the Royal Government and the Cambodian people, Samdech Thipadei expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Chinese government and people for their unwavering support.

Reaffirming the strong bilateral relationship, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underlined that the Cambodia-China partnership remains firm, rooted in mutual respect and non-interference. The accomplishments achieved and President Xi’s visit are clear evidence of this enduring and respectful friendship.
