Kampot (FN), Apr. 21 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reacted to critics who claimed that the Royal Government failed to promote Khmer culture during the recent Khmer New Year celebrations, despite the widespread organisation of cultural events.

The premier spoke on Monday (Apr. 21) during the inauguration of the Kampot International Tourism Port.

“When it comes to New Year celebrations, some say that just because one person takes off the shirt, Khmer culture has completely disappeared. Under the leadership of the Cambodian People’s Party, why not highlight scenes where people across the country are dressed in traditional attire? Instead, critics focus only on people splashing water and powder, and ignore places where traditional games like Orng Kunh and tug of war are being played,” the premier underscored.

Samdech Thipadei noted that focusing criticism on a single negative instance is unfair and likened it to insulting the 17 million Khmer people who are making efforts to preserve their cultural heritage.

It is worth noting that in 2025, provincial and district authorities across the country organised New Year celebrations at all levels—from provinces to districts and communes—particularly at popular tourist sites and monasteries. These celebrations took place in addition to the large-scale Maha Angkor Sangkran event held in Siem Reap province.

As part of this year’s Angkor Sangkran festivities, Khmer folk games were also organised. The premier specifically instructed all provincial and municipal committees to prioritise the promotion of these traditional games in order to strengthen and showcase Khmer cultural arts to both national and international visitors.
