Pursat (FN), Apr. 22 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced the re-enactment of the law related to the use of fishing gear, aimed at preventing illegal fishing activities and protecting small-scale fishermen’s livelihoods.
The premier spoke on Tuesday (Apr. 22) at the inauguration of new Ford production line and Ford sub-assembly plant of RMA (Cambodia) Plc. in Pursat Province.
Samdech Thipadei mentioned that when the parliament reconvenes, it may review the law related to the use of fishing gear, especially nets.
“The old law only allowed 50-metre nets. Under the new legislation, the legal net length may be extended by three to four times, with checks on mesh size and technique,” the premier underscored.
The premier said that if the Royal Government does not regulate clearly, large-scale fishing operators will do everything, and there will be no place for ordinary fishermen to earn a living.
On the occasion, Premier Hun Manet called for a clear distinction between traditional fishermen and large-scale commercial operators. He said those involved in commercial fishing must register their business, comply with the relevant laws, and clearly designate their fishing locations—highlighting that ordinary fishermen cannot afford nets spanning several kilometres.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet added that preventing illegal fishing, such as poaching and fishing using fine-mesh nets, will make fishing sustainable.
At the same time, Samdech Thipadei stressed the importance of preserving natural resources in Pursat Province, noting its contribution to curbing deforestation and tackling fishing-related crimes. He expressed gratitude to the provincial authorities, relevant ministries, institutions, and all branches of the armed forces for their interventions, and called on the public to join in efforts to combat such offences.
