(Phnom Penh): In addition to producing clothes and shoes, the capabilities of Cambodian citizens have grown to the point where they can now manufacture electrical components and cars. The advancement of Cambodian children's abilities has prompted Prime Minister Hun Manet to express great admiration and pride.
The premier spoke on Sunday (Apr. 27) during his meeting with leaders of Informal Economic Associations at OCIC, Phnom Penh.
"Initially, we only opened low-level factories, but now we are not only producing clothes and shoes — we can produce electrical components and cars. I am very proud to see a car made in Cambodia ('Made in Cambodia'). I went to inspect the label [...] It was not self-proclaimed; international organisations have recognised that this car qualifies to be labelled as Cambodian-made," the premier underscored.
According to the prime minister, Cambodia once imported even basic goods such as a can of orange juice, but today it has the capacity to produce modern cars assembled locally — with international recognition. The production line, operated by Cambodian workers, was personally visited by Samdech Thipadei earlier this week in Krakor district, Pursat province.
Samdech Thipadei also noted that, beyond clothing production, Cambodian workers are now capable of manufacturing electrical appliances, high-end jewellery, and modern furniture, with some products being sold in the Italian market for tens of thousands of dollars. He highlighted that achieving such high market value relies heavily on the manufacturers' advanced skills and international recognition.
Reflecting on the growing capabilities of Cambodian workers, Premier Hun Manet also called on unions representing workers to perform their duties with professionalism and in strict accordance with the law, to resolve labour disputes transparently and effectively.
Samdech Thipadei stressed that resolving worker disputes must be based on professionalism and should not be influenced by unrelated issues; otherwise, disputes will remain unresolved. He likened employers and employees to a husband and wife, and described the Royal Government as their guardian, urging all parties to work together peacefully to promote growth in the employment and investment sectors.
