(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet urged citizens, workers, and employees to reflect on the actions of opposition politicians, noting that rather than helping to attract investors to Cambodia, they have instead called for investors to stay away.
Samdech Thipadei said that these politicians do not consider the interests of the Cambodian people — the ordinary citizens. He pointed out that when the United States (US) imposed tariffs on Cambodian goods, Cambodian citizens wrote letters requesting tax concessions, whereas opposition politicians lobbied for increased tariffs against Cambodia.
The premier spoke on Sunday (Apr. 27) during his meeting with leaders of Informal Economic Associations at OCIC, Phnom Penh.
"I ask: when he was a Member of Parliament, did he ever work to attract investment? Protecting the interests of citizens is not a monopoly — it is not the sole responsibility or right of the government. Since the US government announced tariffs on 2 April, we have seen representatives of unions and federations writing letters requesting that the US reconsider for the sake of our compatriots. American companies and the US Chamber of Commerce have also worked hard on this matter. Whether or not it succeeds is less important than the spirit shown," the premier underscored.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet reflected on the experience of other countries, where both ruling parties and opposition groups unite to address national challenges — particularly issues such as US tariffs. In contrast, in Cambodia, he noted, opposition politicians exploit every issue for political gain.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei called on citizens, especially those working in the informal economy, to clearly consider who truly stands with them and protects their interests. He affirmed that it is only the Royal Government, led by the Cambodian People's Party, that genuinely defends the interests of the people.
