(Phnom Penh): Chinese electric vehicle company BYD officially breaks ground on new car assembly plant in Cambodia on Monday (Apr. 28). The plant is located in the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone.
Sun Chanthol, First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), represents Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to preside over the ceremony.
Sun Chanthol underlined that once the plant is completed and begins operations in the fourth quarter of 2025, the use of BYD vehicles in Cambodia is expected to increase.
BYD’s factory in Cambodia will have the capacity to assemble up to 10,000 cars per year. The company will produce two types of vehicles including fully electric BYD EVs and hybrid models that use both gasoline and electricity.
It should be noted that Cambodia currently has nine car assembly plants.
