(Sihanoukville): Sun Chanthol, First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), stated that the financial and other assistance provided by Cambodia’s Chinese friends, including cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, have significantly contributed to supporting Cambodia’s socio-economic development and strengthening the Kingdom’s political independence.

Sun Chanthol spoke on Monday (Apr. 28) during the groundbreaking ceremony for Chinese electric vehicle company BYD’s new car assembly plant at the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone in Cambodia.

Sun Chanthol noted that the fruitful outcomes of recent meetings between the top leaders of Cambodia and China would continue to strengthen diplomatic ties between the two nations as comprehensive strategic partners and "iron-clad friends," working towards the building of China-Cambodia community with a shared future in the new era. This cooperation will be marked by high quality, high standards, and high-level exchanges, with ongoing efforts to reinforce strategic mutual trust, deepen fruitful cooperation, foster people-to-people exchanges, and promote closer multilateral collaboration, thereby creating a new model of international relations and a shared future community.

Additionally, Chanthol underscored that “the financing and other assistance provided by our Chinese friends to Cambodia, including through the Belt and Road Initiative launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping, have not only contributed to Cambodia’s socio-economic development but also helped to consolidate Cambodia’s political independence.”

He continued that, regarding the construction and development of Cambodia’s transport infrastructure, China remains the leading partner, having provided concessional loans and grants exceeding USD 3 billion and constructed nearly 4,000 kilometres of roads, including 16 major bridges with a combined length of over 14,000 metres.

He added that the Funan Techo Integrated Water Resources Management Project was officially signed under a public-private partnership agreement and related documents on 17 April 2025. This project also received strong support from President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China during his recent state visit to Cambodia from 17-18 April 2025.
